ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study examines whether, how and when socially responsible human resource management (SRHRM) practices increase employees' in-role and extra-role corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses data from 422 employees of 68 companies.FindingsSRHRM improves employees' in-role CSR-specific performance via impression management motivation and enhance extra-role CSR-specific performance via prosocial motivation. Moral identity symbolization strengthens the relationship between SRHRM and impression management motivation, and moral identity internalization reinforces the relationship between SRHRM and prosocial motivation. The authors also propose mediated moderation models.Practical implicationsThis study indicates that company can adopt SRHRM practices to improve employees' in-role and extra-role CSR-specific performance.Originality/valueThis study reveals how and when SRHRM practices influence employees' CSR-specific performance and sheds light on the social impacts of SRHRM.

ABSTRACT

Substantial economic disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic upended daily life and contributed to a widespread symptom of psychological distress during this period. Disruptions also led to more concerns about future stressful events related to financial hardship, or economic-related anticipatory stress, with the potential to undermine mental health. Although prior research provides ample evidence that state policies can impact mental and physical health, it has not considered how state policy contexts reduce adverse psychological outcomes stemming from economic-related anticipatory stress. The present study uses national survey data from the Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey (April 2020–October 2020) to examine the extent to which state policy contexts moderate the association between economic-related anticipatory stress and depression/anxiety. We find that states with stronger social safety nets weakened the impact of anticipatory stress on depression/anxiety. This finding held for different types of anticipated economic hardships (i.e., reduced income, difficulty paying rent, difficulty affording food), as well as for policies that existed prior to COVID-19 and policies enacted in response to COVID-19. Findings provide strong evidence that state policies may buffer against poor mental outcomes for people who even anticipate facing economic uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. We provide insight into how state policy contexts can shape individual experiences in ways that impact the mental health outcomes of the United States population.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has had and continues to have a significant impact on global public health. One of the characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 is a surface homotrimeric spike protein, which is primarily responsible for the host immune response upon infection. Here we present the preclinical studies of a broadly protective SARS-CoV-2 subunit vaccine developed from our trimer domain platform using the Delta spike protein, from antigen design through purification, vaccine evaluation and manufacturability. The pre-fusion trimerized Delta spike protein, PF-D-Trimer, was highly expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, purified by a rapid one-step anti-Trimer Domain monoclonal antibody immunoaffinity process and prepared as a vaccine formulation with an adjuvant. Immunogenicity studies have shown that this vaccine candidate induces robust immune responses in mouse, rat and Syrian hamster models. It also protects K18-hACE2 transgenic mice in a homologous viral challenge. Neutralizing antibodies induced by this vaccine show cross-reactivity against the ancestral WA1, Delta and several Omicrons, including BA.5.2. The formulated PF-D Trimer is stable for up to six months without refrigeration. The Trimer Domain platform was proven to be a key technology in the rapid production of PF-D-Trimer vaccine and may be crucial to accelerate the development and accessibility of updated versions of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has had a widespread and profound impact on people's mental health. The factors associated with mental symptoms among men diagnosed with infertility, a disease closely related to psychological conditions, remain unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the risk factors associated with mental symptoms among infertile Chinese men during the pandemic. RESULTS: A total of 4,098 eligible participants were recruited in this cross-sectional, nationwide study, including 2,034 (49.6%) with primary infertility and 2,064 (50.4%) with secondary infertility. The prevalence of mental health conditions was 36.3%, 39.6%, and 6.7% for anxiety, depression, and post-pandemic stress, respectively. Sexual dysfunction is associated with a higher risk with adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of 1.40 for anxiety, 1.38 for depression, and 2.32 for stress. Men receiving infertility drug therapy displayed a higher risk for anxiety (adjusted OR, 1.31) and depression (adjusted OR, 1.28) symptoms, while those receiving intrauterine insemination had a lower risk of anxiety (adjusted OR, 0.56) and depression (adjusted OR, 0.55) symptoms. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant psychological impact on infertile men. Several psychologically vulnerable populations were identified, including individuals with sexual dysfunction, respondents receiving infertility drug therapy, and those experiencing control measures for COVID-19. The findings provide a comprehensive profile of the mental health status of infertile Chinese men during the COVID-19 outbreak and provide potential psychological intervention strategies.


RéSUMé: CONTEXTE: L'épidémie de maladie à coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) a eu un impact étendu et profond sur la santé mentale des gens. Les facteurs associés aux symptômes mentaux chez les hommes diagnostiqués comme infertiles, une maladie étroitement liée aux conditions psychologiques, restent flous. L'objectif de cette étude est d'étudier les facteurs de risque associés aux symptômes mentaux chez les hommes chinois infertiles pendant la pandémie. RéSULTATS: Au total, 4 098 participants admissibles ont été recrutés dans cette étude transversale à l'échelle nationale, dont 2 034 (49,6%) présentaient une infertilité primaire et 2 064 (50,4%) une infertilité secondaire. La prévalence des problèmes de santé mentale était respectivement de 36,3 %, 39,6 % et 6,7 % pour l'anxiété, la dépression, et le stress postpandémique. La dysfonction sexuelle est associée à un risque plus élevé avec des odds ratios ajustés (OR) de 1,40 pour l'anxiété, 1,38 pour la dépression et 2,32 pour le stress. Les hommes recevant un traitement médicamenteux contre l'infertilité présentaient un risque plus élevé de symptômes d'anxiété (OR ajusté, 1,31) et de dépression (OR ajusté, 1,28), alors que ceux dont le traitement consistait à faire des inséminations intra-utérines présentaient un risque plus faible de symptômes d'anxiété (OR ajusté, 0,56) et de dépression (OR ajusté, 0,55). CONCLUSIONS: La pandémie de COVID-19 a eu un impact psychologique important sur les hommes infertiles. Plusieurs populations psychologiquement vulnérables ont été identifiées, notamment les personnes souffrant de dysfonction sexuelle, les hommes recevant un traitement médicamenteux contre l'infertilité, et ceux subissant des mesures de contrôle de la COVID-19. Les résultats fournissent un profil complet de l'état de santé mentale des hommes Chinois infertiles pendant l'épidémie de COVID-19 et fournissent des stratégies potentielles d'intervention psychologique.

ABSTRACT

T-cell immunity plays an important role in the control of SARS-CoV-2 and has a great cross-protective effect on the variants. The Omicron BA.1 variant contains more than 30 mutations in the spike and severely evades humoral immunity. To understand how Omicron BA.1 spike mutations affect cellular immunity, the T-cell epitopes of SARS-CoV-2 wild-type and Omicron BA.1 spike in BALB/c (H-2d) and C57BL/6 mice (H-2b) were mapped through IFNγ ELISpot and intracellular cytokine staining assays. The epitopes were identified and verified in splenocytes from mice vaccinated with the adenovirus type 5 vector encoding the homologous spike, and the positive peptides involved in spike mutations were tested against wide-type and Omicron BA.1 vaccines. A total of eleven T-cell epitopes of wild-type and Omicron BA.1 spike were identified in BALB/c mice, and nine were identified in C57BL/6 mice, only two of which were CD4+ T-cell epitopes and most of which were CD8+ T-cell epitopes. The A67V and Del 69-70 mutations in Omicron BA.1 spike abolished one epitope in wild-type spike, and the T478K, E484A, Q493R, G496S and H655Y mutations resulted in three new epitopes in Omicron BA.1 spike, while the Y505H mutation did not affect the epitope. These data describe the difference of T-cell epitopes in SARS-CoV-2 wild-type and Omicron BA.1 spike in H-2b and H-2d mice, providing a better understanding of the effects of Omicron BA.1 spike mutations on cellular immunity.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is known to disproportionately affect older individuals. How aging processes affect SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease progression remains largely unknown. Here, we found that DNA damage, one of the hallmarks of aging, promoted SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro and in vivo. SARS-CoV-2 entry was facilitated by DNA damage caused by extrinsic genotoxic stress or telomere dysfunction and hampered by inhibition of the DNA damage response (DDR). Mechanistic analysis revealed that DDR increased expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the primary receptor of SARS-CoV-2, by activation of transcription factor c-Jun. Importantly, in vivo experiment using a mouse-adapted viral strain also verified the significant roles of DNA damage in viral entry and severity of infection. Expression of ACE2 was elevated in the older human and mice tissues and positively correlated with γH2AX, a DNA damage biomarker, and phosphorylated c-Jun (p-c-Jun). Finally, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) and MDL-800, which promote DNA repair, alleviated SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease severity in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, our data provide insights into the age-associated differences in SARS-CoV-2 infection and a novel approach for antiviral intervention.

ABSTRACT

Progressive fibrosing interstitial lung diseases (PF-ILDs) result in high mortality and lack effective therapies. The pathogenesis of PF-ILDs involves macrophages driving inflammation and irreversible fibrosis. Fc-gamma receptors (FcγRs) regulate macrophages and inflammation, but their roles in PF-ILDs remain unclear. We characterized the expression of FcγRs and found up-regulated FcγRIIB in human and mouse lungs following exposure to silica. FcγRIIB deficiency aggravated lung dysfunction, inflammation and fibrosis in silica-exposed mice. Using single-cell transcriptomics and in vitro experiments, FcγRIIB was found in alveolar macrophages, where it regulated the expression of fibrosis-related genes Spp1 and Ctss. In mice with macrophage-specific over-expression of FcγRIIB, and in mice treated with adenovirus by intra-tracheal instillation to up-regulate FcγRIIB, silica-induced functional and histological changes were ameliorated. Our data from three genetic models and a therapeutic model suggest that FcγRIIB plays a protective role that can be enhanced by adenoviral over-expression, representing a potential therapeutic strategy for PF-ILDs.

Existing studies show that the COVID‐19 pandemic influences employee outcome in the work domain. However, the impact of business threat due to COVID‐19 on employee daily insomnia remains unexplored. Addressing this research gap can help scholars understand the risks of COVID‐19 in the non‐work domain. Drawing on appraisal theories of emotion, we explore how and when business threat due to COVID‐19 triggers employee insomnia. Using an experience sampling methodology where 89 employees are surveyed for 7 workdays, our multilevel analyses show that employee daily hope and workplace anxiety mediate the effects of business threat due to COVID‐19 on employee insomnia. Furthermore, socially responsible human resource management (SRHRM) practices weaken the negative relationship between business threat due to COVID‐19 and employees' hope and mitigate the positive relationship between business threat due to COVID‐19 and their workplace anxiety. We also find that SRHRM practices influence the indirect effect of business threat due to COVID‐19 on employee insomnia via workplace anxiety. Our study helps understand the underlying mechanisms in the relationship between business threat due to COVID‐19 and employee insomnia and further sheds light on the role of SRHRM in mitigating the destructive effect of business threat due to COVID‐19. ABSTRACT

The receptor-binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike mediates the key to binding the virus to the host receptor, but capturing the molecular signal of this spike RBD remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a new surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) approach, which used gold nanoparticles prepared by low-speed constant-temperature centrifugation by bromine and calcium ions in two cleaning steps as the enhanced substrate to rapidly and accurately detect spike RBD large protein molecules in body fluids. The detection signal was extremely stable, and the orientation of the spike RBD on the enhanced substrate surface was also determined. This approach was specific in distinguishing different SARS-CoV-2 variants of spike RBD, including Delta, Beta, Gamma, and Omicron. Additionally, the enhanced substrate can identify biologically active or inactive spike RBD. This two-step cleaning enhanced substrate opens up opportunities not only for early diagnostics of SARS-CoV-2 virus but also for developing targeted drugs against viruses.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19) is a sudden public event affecting all human beings, with the rapid transmission, extensive groups affected, many complications, and high mortality. Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history of preventing and treating infectious diseases, and numerous studies have shown that Traditional Chinese Medicine, especially herbal medicine, has a positive effect on the prevention, treatment, and post-healing recovery of this COVID-19, and herbal medicines to supplement qi and blood often occupy a certain proportion of it. However, there is no relevant meta-analysis to date. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of qi and blood tonic herbal medicines in the treatment of COVID-19 through Systematic Review and meta-analysis to provide a reference basis for widespread clinical application. METHODS: We will search from the following databases for the period from the time of database construction to March 1st, 2023. The English databases include: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane library, WOS, Google Scholar, and CENTRAL; The Chinese databases include: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Literature Database, Technology Journal Database, and Wanfang. Randomized controlled trials in English or Chinese that include Chinese herbal medicines for tonifying Qi and Blood in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 will be included. Data were independently screened and collected by 2 investigators. The risk of bias for each trial was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. RevMan 5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis of the data. Primary outcome indicators included cure, mortality, and exacerbation rates (change in disease severity category, patient admission to ICU, etc.). Secondary outcome indicators included recovery rate or duration of major symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, fatigue, and weakness, etc.), rate or duration of nucleic acid conversion for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, improvement or recovery of chest CT performance, length of hospital stay, and other adverse events. RESULTS: This protocol adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-P guidelines to ensure clarity and completeness of reporting in all phases of the systematic review. CONCLUSION: This study will provide evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of Qi and Blood Tonic Chinese Medicines for the treatment of COVID-19. ABSTRACT

The Omicron variant is sweeping the world, which displays striking immune escape potential through mutations at key antigenic sites on the spike protein, making broad-spectrum SARS-CoV-2 prevention or therapeutical strategies urgently needed. Previously, we have reported a hACE2-targeting neutralizing antibody 3E8, which could efficiently block both prototype SARS-CoV-2 and Delta variant infections in prophylactic mouse models, having the potential of broad-spectrum to prevent SARS-CoV-2. However, preparation of monoclonal neutralizing antibodies is severely limited by the time-consuming process and the relative high cost. Here, we utilized a modified VEEV replicon with two subgenomic (sg) promoters engineered to express the light and heavy chains of the 3E8 mAb. The feasibility and protective efficacy of replicating mRNA encoding 3E8 against Omicron infection in the hamster were demonstrated through the lung targeting delivery with the help of VEEV-VRP. Overall, we developed a safe and cost-effective platform of broad-spectrum to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection.

ABSTRACT

In a sample of 34 countries during 1965Q2 to 2021Q3, this paper offers an empirical analysis of how household debt and oil price shocks influence economic growth in the shadow of the pandemic. We exploit the quarter lags inherent in the response of debt and the oil price to output to pin down the relationship between household debt, the oil price, and economic growth in an unrestricted panel VAR model. We find that household debt has a short-term positive impact on economic growth, and this impact is lagged, while oil price shocks have a negative effect on economic growth. Pandemic uncertainty has an obvious and positive effect on household debt, while it has an obvious and negative effect on economic growth and oil price. The results hold under several robustness tests.

ABSTRACT

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the pathogen responsible for COVID-19, has caused an ongoing worldwide pandemic. Due to the rapid emergence of variants of concern (VOCs), novel vaccines and vaccination strategies are urgently needed. We developed an intranasal vaccine consisting of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) fused to the antibody Fc fragment (RBD-Fc). RBD-Fc could induce strong humoral immune responses via intranasal vaccination. Notably, this immunogen could efficiently induce IgG and IgA and establish mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract. The induced antibodies could efficiently neutralize wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and currently identified SARS-CoV-2 VOCs, including the Omicron variant. In a mouse model, intranasal immunization could provide complete protection against a lethal SARS-CoV-2 challenge. Unfortunately, the limitation of our study is the small number of animals used in the immune response analysis. Our results suggest that recombinant RBD-Fc delivered via intranasal vaccination has considerable potential as a mucosal vaccine that may reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

ABSTRACT

Background Patients with moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have been recommended to receive prone position ventilation (PPV). However, the dynamic changes in respiratory mechanics during PPV and their relationship with the prognosis have not been sufficiently evaluated. In addition, the impact of using neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) during PPV on respiratory mechanics is not clear enough. Thus, the study aims to investigate the above-mentioned issues. Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted on 22 patients with moderate to severe ARDS who received PPV in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University. A multifunctional gastric tube was used to measure the patients’ respiratory mechanics during supine position ventilation (SPV), early PPV (PPV within 4 h of initiation), and middle/late PPV (more than 6 h after the initiation of PPV). Longitudinal data were analyzed with generalized estimating equations (GEE). Results Compared with SPV, the esophageal pressure swings (ΔPes) measured during the PPV was significantly higher (SPV 7.46 vs. early PPV 8.00 vs. middle/late PPV 8.30 cmH2O respectively;PSPVvs.middle/late PPV =0.025<0.05). A stratified analysis by patients’ outcome showed that the peak airway pressure (Ppeak), ΔPes and respiration rate (RR) in the death group were significantly higher than survival group. On the contrary, the tidal volume (Vt), diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMGdi) and PaO2/FiO2 ratio (PFR) in the death group were significantly lower than survival group. Notably, the ΔPes and transpulmonary driving pressure (DPL) were significantly lower in the patients treated with NMBAs (7.08 vs. 8.76 cmH2O ΔPes;P<0.01), (14.82 vs. 18.08 cmH2O DPL;P<0.001). Conclusions During the transition from SPV to early PPV and then to middle/late PPV, the ΔPes in the PPV were greater than SPV and it fluctuated within a normal range while oxygenation improved significantly in all patients. The Ppeak, ΔPes and RR in the death group were significantly higher than survival group. When NMBAs were used, the ΔPes, inspiratory transpulmonary pressure (PLei), driving pressure (DP) and DPL were significantly decreased, suggesting that the rational combination of NMBAs and PPV may exert a synergistic protective effect on the lungs.

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has severely affected the lives of people around the world, especially some patients with severe chronic diseases. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak from December 2019 to April 2020 on treating patients with PH. A questionnaire regarding the medical condition of PH patients during the COVID-19 pandemic was designed by PH diagnostic experts in The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, China Respiratory Center. One hundred and fifty-six subjects with PH from non-Hubei regions in China were invited to participate in this survey online. 63.4% (n = 99) of them had difficulty seeing a doctor, and the main reason was fear of contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the hospital. Medical treatment was affected in 25% (n = 39) of patients, and who lived in rural areas, and discontinued medical therapy for financial reasons were at a higher risk of medical treatment being affected. Patients who reduced nutrition, and had difficulty seeing a doctor were more likely to get deteriorated. During the epidemic, the hospitalization rate of PH patients was 33.33%. Patients with aggravated PH had a high risk of hospitalization (odds ratio [OR] = 2.844), while patients who visited a doctor during the epidemic reduced the risk of hospitalization (OR = 0.33). In conclusion, during the COVID-19 pandemic, PH patients had difficulty seeing a doctor, and their medical treatment was affected, even worsened, and increased the risk of hospitalization.

ABSTRACT

Background The epidemiological characteristics and transmissibility of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) may undergo changes due to the mutation of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains. The purpose of this study is to compare the differences in the outbreaks of the different strains with regards to aspects such as epidemiological characteristics, transmissibility, and difficulties in prevention and control. Methods COVID-19 data from outbreaks of pre-Delta strains, the Delta variant and Omicron variant, were obtained from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Case data were collected from China's direct-reporting system, and the data concerning outbreaks were collected by on-site epidemiological investigators and collated by the authors of this paper. Indicators such as the effective reproduction number (Reff), time-dependent reproduction number (Rt), rate of decrease in transmissibility (RDT), and duration from the illness onset date to the diagnosed date (DID)/reported date (DIR) were used to compare differences in transmissibility between pre-Delta strains, Delta variants and Omicron variants. Non-parametric tests (namely the Kruskal-Wallis H and Mean-Whitney U tests) were used to compare differences in epidemiological characteristics and transmissibility between outbreaks of different strains. P < 0.05 indicated that the difference was statistically significant. Results Mainland China has maintained a “dynamic zero-out strategy” since the first case was reported, and clusters of outbreaks have occurred intermittently. The strains causing outbreaks in mainland China have gone through three stages: the outbreak of pre-Delta strains, the outbreak of the Delta variant, and outbreaks involving the superposition of Delta and Omicron variant strains. Each outbreak of pre-Delta strains went through two stages: a rising stage and a falling stage, Each outbreak of the Delta variant and Omicron variant went through three stages: a rising stage, a platform stage and a falling stage. The maximum Reff value of Omicron variant outbreaks was highest (median: 6.7;ranged from 5.3 to 8.0) and the differences were statistically significant. The RDT value of outbreaks involving pre-Delta strains was smallest (median: 91.4%;[IQR]: 87.30–94.27%), and the differences were statistically significant. The DID and DIR for all strains was mostly in a range of 0–2 days, with more than 75%. The range of duration for outbreaks of pre-Delta strains was the largest (median: 20 days, ranging from 1 to 61 days), and the differences were statistically significant. Conclusion With the evolution of the virus, the transmissibility of the variants has increased. The transmissibility of the Omicron variant is higher than that of both the pre-Delta strains and the Delta variant, and is more difficult to suppress. These findings provide us with get a more clear and precise picture of the transmissibility of the different variants in the real world, in accordance with the findings of previous studies. Reff is more suitable than Rt for assessing the transmissibility of the disease during an epidemic outbreak.

ABSTRACT

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has severely affected the lives of people around the world, especially some patients with severe chronic diseases. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID‐19 outbreak from December 2019 to April 2020 on treating patients with PH. A questionnaire regarding the medical condition of PH patients during the COVID‐19 pandemic was designed by PH diagnostic experts in The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, China Respiratory Center. One hundred and fifty‐six subjects with PH from non‐Hubei regions in China were invited to participate in this survey online. 63.4% (n = 99) of them had difficulty seeing a doctor, and the main reason was fear of contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) in the hospital. Medical treatment was affected in 25% (n = 39) of patients, and who lived in rural areas, and discontinued medical therapy for financial reasons were at a higher risk of medical treatment being affected. Patients who reduced nutrition, and had difficulty seeing a doctor were more likely to get deteriorated. During the epidemic, the hospitalization rate of PH patients was 33.33%. Patients with aggravated PH had a high risk of hospitalization (odds ratio [OR] = 2.844), while patients who visited a doctor during the epidemic reduced the risk of hospitalization (OR = 0.33). In conclusion, during the COVID‐19 pandemic, PH patients had difficulty seeing a doctor, and their medical treatment was affected, even worsened, and increased the risk of hospitalization.

ABSTRACT

The low-carbon development of air transport industry is of great significance for China to achieve the commitment of carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals. In order to improve the basic data of aviation CO2 emissions, this study continuously collected full flight information in China from January 2017 to December 2020, and established a flight information database and an aircraft-engine parameter database. On the basis of IPCC's Tier 3B accounting method, this study established a long-term aviation CO2 emissions inventory of China from 2017 to 2020 by calculating and accumulating CO2 emissions of each flight. And aviation CO2 emissions of various provinces and cities in China were calculated combined with spatial allocation method. The results showed that aviation CO2 emissions in China was 104.1, 120.1, 136.9, and 88.3 Mt in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively, with annual growth rates of 15.4%, 14.0%, and −35.3% in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively. Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, aviation CO2 emissions in all 31 provinces and 93% of cities decreased in 2020 compared with 2019. China is in the stage of rapid development of air transport industry, and aviation fossil energy consumption and CO2 emissions have continued to grow in recent years.

ABSTRACT

[Background] Students in early adolescence have a high incidence of mental health problems. Studies have found an association between physical activity and mental health in adults, but the association among children and adolescents is not clear. [Objective] This study investigates the relationship between mental health and physical activity among students in early adolescence, aiming to provide evidence for the prevention and control of mental problems among students in this stage. [Methods] By using stratified cluster random sampling method, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 859 fourth grade students from 12 elementary schools in 3 urban and 3 suburban areas in Shanghai. The survey included students' general information, the total and mental health problems, and physical activity time, and calculated the total and dimensional (emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, and prosocial behaviors) positive rates of mental health and the daily moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity time. Chi-square test was used to compare the differences in mental health status among students with different family economic, educational backgrounds and family relationships. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations between mental health problems and physical activity. [Results] The total positive rate of mental health problems among the participants was 10.7%, and the rate of boys was higher than that of girls (13.4% vs. 8.0%, X 2=6.58, P < 0.05). The dimensional positive rates from high to low were peer problems (22.9%), hyperactivity (15.8%), emotional symptoms (9.0%), conduct problems (7.6%), and social impairment (5.2%). The median time[M (P25, P75)] of daily moderate-tovigorous-intensity physical activity of the students was 76.9 (8.4, 107.1) min;48.7% of the students spent less than 60 min on moderateto-vigorous-intensity physical activities per day, and the proportion in boys (52.2%) was higher than that in girls (45.1%) (X 2=4.36, P < 0.05). The rank-sum test results showed that the daily time of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity was correlated with the positive rate of emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, and total mental health problems (P < 0.05). The chi-square test results showed that the factors such as mother's education level, father's and mother's monthly income, and family relationships were related to the positive rate of total mental health problems (P < 0.05). The logistic regression analysis results showed that spending less than 60 min on moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activities per day was associated to reporting hyperactivity, total mental health problems, and social impairment, and the ORs (95%CI) were 1.633 (1.095-2.436), 2.811 (1.676-4.714), and 2.307 (1.153-4.618) respectively. [Conclusion] Among the fourth grade students in Shanghai, the positive rate of boys' mental health problems is higher than that of girls', and the overall rate of peer problems is high. Nearly half of the students spend less than 60 min on moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activities per day. Doing moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity for less than 60 min per day is possibly associated to the positive rate of students' mental health problems.
